2022 Valve Cover Inspection

2022 Valve Cover Inspection

After I had received the spare parts from the US (see previous post about MercedesSource), I went to the garage for two inspections:

  • To have a visual inspection under the engine valves cover to inspect some of the inner parts of the engine, e.g. the timing chain.
  • Even after last year's replacement of the carter seal of the automatic transmission, the car still seemed to leak some transmission oil. Not really that much, but I do not want to spill the oil in an uncontrolled way.
The valve cover removed. All looking good...
Timing chain still in perfect condition
All clean and neat... Not the slightest slack on the chain...

As you can see, the first inspection delivered nice results. Everything looked fine. No need to replace the timing chain.

For the transmission oil leakage, the automatic transmission has been cleaned and made oil free from the outside to see where the oil came from. At the end of the investigation we concluded it was definitely neither from the front of the automatic transmission nor the carter seal that had been replaced last year. So, the conclusion is that the leakage comes from the rear of the transmission and that would mean (most probably) replacing seals in the transmission box, which would mean disassembly of that part of the car.

As it was already June by then, and so in the middle of the driving season, we have decided to postpone this activity for the winter. So, I can save some money on my bank account for the costs to be made ;-)
